Film Lab and Preservation Assistant

BB Optics, Inc. is offering a full-time Film Lab and Preservation Assistant position with a wide range of responsibilities and activities. BB Optics is a motion picture film and video laboratory in New York City that specializes in archival film and video preservation and post-production services. 

Our clients include cultural and educational institutions, film archives, movie studios, production companies, independent filmmakers and video artists, foundations and estates.  We offer motion picture film, video, and digital services in all gauges and formats. This position is available immediately as a full-time salaried staff position after a 3-month trial period. 

The position is not remote. It is a full time, in-person position in a Manhattan office that strictly follows CDC guidelines.

Salary Range: $45,000 to $55,000

Responsibilities:

  • Interacting with clients in person, by phone and email, making work orders and invoices and preparing film, video and audio materials for provided services.

  • Work cooperatively with vendors and colleagues to inspect quality controlled deliverables assuring in-house QC expectations are being met.

  • Undertake or assist in collection assessment of media collections and preservation planning.

  • Contribute to various post-production duties such as color grading, conforming, transcoding, exporting, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and experience in working with 16mm and 35mm motion picture film and various video and digital formats.

  • A clear communicator who is eager to interact with fellow staff, clients, and vendors in a friendly and professional manner.

  • Articulate, outgoing and proactive with excellent analytical, organizational, communication and follow-up skills.

  • Work independently and as a team, under pressure, and deliver on deadlines in a sometimes fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to remain focused for extended periods of time on detail-oriented tasks.

  • Maintain and foster positive relationships with clients and staff.

  • Ability to work discreetly on confidential and privileged films and materials.

  • Experience simultaneously managing multiple projects and competing priorities in an effective way.

  • Ability to manage the physical aspects of moving and storing film and video materials and equipment. 

  • A strong interest in keeping informed of newer technologies to improve quality and streamline workflow.

  • Familiar with legacy and contemporary post-production techniques and workflows.

  • Working knowledge of both MAC and PC platforms as well as experience working with spreadsheets, databases, and film, video, audio and photographic editing and design applications.

  • Experience with editing platforms and basic knowledge of color grading is a plus.

  • Previous experience with data management; archiving and restoration projects is a plus.

  • Master’s degree in Moving Image Archiving or library science is a plus.

  • Must be able to work regular M-F, 10 am to 5 pm shifts in our Manhattan office but able to travel off-site when needed to help move items to and from storage, work with vendors and clients or make off-site collection assessments.

This is an ENTRY LEVEL POSITION that could become a wide-ranging role and will suit an applicant who wants variety that is associated with working with a small and nimble team. If it’s a good fit, we would  welcome an experienced archivist, filmmaker or laboratory technician.
